Start Here | New to Speech Therapy?

A clear, gentle first step for worried parents.

If you’re worried about your child’s talking, listening, or learning, and you’re not sure what to do next, this page is for you. Most parents come to us feeling a mix of concern, guilt, confusion and “I don’t want to overreact, but…”. That’s completely normal.

You don’t need to have the perfect words or a diagnosis before you contact us.

Is This the Right Place for Us?

You’re in the Right Place If…

Your child is not talking as much as other kids their age, or has suddenly stopped using words.

People outside the family struggle to understand them, even when you can.

They swap or drop sounds (e.g. “tat” for “cat”), lisp, or stutter on certain words.

Reading, spelling or writing is becoming a battle, or homework takes hours.

They find friendships and conversations tricky, misreading social cues, interrupting, or staying very quiet.

You’ve been told “let’s wait and see” but your gut says something more is going on.

What Does a Speech Pathologist Do?

In short: we help children communicate more easily and confidently with their family, friends, teachers and the wider world.

At Speak Wonders, that can look like:

Speech Sounds

Helping children say sounds clearly so others can understand them.

Helping children understand and use words, sentences, and stories.

Language

Social Communication

Helping children communicate and interact with others in everyday situations.

Helping children who stutter or have difficulties with the smooth flow of speech.

Fluency/stuttering

Your Child’s Journey with Us

The Speak Wonders Pathway: Stage by Stage

Initial Phone Call

  • You choose a time that suits you (often in school hours or early evening).

  • A clinician or intake team member calls you, not a call centre.

  • We ask a few simple questions about your child’s age, strengths and challenges.

  • You can ask anything, no such thing as a silly question.

  • Together we decide whether an assessment or discuss what is the best next step.

Common Worries & Honest Answers

  • It’s never a waste of time to check in. The worst-case scenario is that we reassure you and give you a few tips to try at home.

  •  We work with all kinds of personalities every day. We adjust how we run sessions to suit your child, not the other way around.

  • That’s why we offer after-school times, home/school/childcare visits and telehealth. Together we can find a rhythm that doesn’t break your week.

  • Not always. Some children just need a short boost to build specific skills, while others benefit from longer support. We’ll be clear about goals and progress so you always know what to expect.

  • That’s very normal, especially at the start. We focus on building trust first and use play-based, interest-led strategies to help your child feel comfortable and willing to join in.

  • We completely understand. Our sessions are designed to feel positive, fun, and confidence-building, not clinical or intimidating. Many children see it as a place where they get extra support to succeed.

  • Early support can make a big difference, and it’s often simpler to build skills early than to fix gaps later. If support isn’t needed, we’ll tell you, but if it is, you’ve started at the right time.
