Literacy & Reading/Spelling Support
What Is Literacy & Reading/Spelling Support?
Literacy support addresses difficulties with learning to read, spell and write, which are strongly linked to underlying language and phonological skills. Speech pathologists are well placed to assess and treat literacy because of their training in oral and written language.

Who Is This For?
Children who find learning to read, spell or write harder than expected, even with structured teaching. Warning signs include difficulty recognising letters/sounds, sounding out words, remembering spelling patterns, or understanding what they read.

Benefits
Improved literacy skills can support academic progress, independence with homework and lifelong access to learning and written material. Early intervention can help reduce the impact of literacy difficulties and other learning difficulties on self‑esteem and participation at school.

How We Help
What To Expect
After assessment of phonological awareness, decoding, comprehension and spelling, sessions provide explicit, systematic teaching of reading and spelling using evidence‑based, structured literacy approaches. Therapy is tailored to the school curriculum and may involve coordination with teachers and other professionals.
Our Techniques
We use structured, synthetic phonics approaches and the “Big 6” components of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and oral language) recommended in literacy research. Therapy includes multisensory activities, decodable texts, and closely monitored practice.
Real Life Targets
Targets may include sound–letter knowledge, blending and segmenting sounds, spelling rules and patterns, word recognition, reading fluency, understanding sentences and paragraphs, and planning and organising written language.
