Speech Sound Intervention
What Is Speech Sound Intervention?
Speech sound intervention supports children who have difficulty saying certain sounds or sound patterns, often called speech sound disorders or phonological delays. This can affect how well others understand them at home, preschool and school.

Who Is This For?
Children whose speech is hard to understand, who "swap" or leave out sounds, or use immature speech patterns long after peers. Families often notice others frequently ask their child to repeat themselves, or frustration escalates when not understood.

Benefits
Improving speech sound skills can make your child easier to understand, support social participation, and reduce frustration in day‑to‑day communication. Clearer speech can also contribute to stronger literacy foundations, because sound awareness is closely linked with reading and spelling skills.

How We Help
What To Expect
After a detailed speech assessment, therapy sessions focus on teaching specific sounds and sound patterns using structured practice, play‑based activities, and home practice. Parents are actively involved so practice continues between sessions, which Australian research shows is a key part of effective intervention.
Our Techniques
We draw on evidence‑based phonological and motor‑based approaches (e.g., minimal pairs, cycles, contrast therapy, and high‑intensity practice) recommended in speech sound intervention literature. Sessions are tailored to your child’s age, attention, and goals, with structured homework to maximise generalisation.
Real Life Targets
Targets may include individual consonant sounds (such as /k/, /g/, /s/, /r/), sound clusters (e.g., “pl”, “st”), syllable shapes, and phonological awareness skills like blending and segmenting sounds in words.
